Building Your Auctioneer Name Recognition
By: Rich Haas

Auctioneer People must see your name and face at least six times before they will remember who you are and what you do for a living. So how do you teach people to remember you? Most of you do not have a written marketing plan that includes a consistent year-around image building campaign.

Stop and think for a moment. If a prospect wanted to reach you right now, where would they find your name and phone number? If you answered with “it’s right on my business card” turn on the TV, prop up your feet and forget the auction business. In the first place, they must want to call you. You must first convince them you are the best choice.

So...where can they instantly lay their hands on your name and number? Try this!

Become so familiar to them that you seem to be a member of the family! That’s right. Once you’ve identified your prospects, become a member of the family and they will never forget you! Its just a matter of working smarter rather than harder. You place your name, photo and phone number squarely in front of every prospect family member. Make yourself a part of their breakfast, lunch and dinner routine. When they party together, be there. During prime time TV in the evening, make them reach out for you. When they come home at night, be there when they place their key in the lock.

Powerful Presence. Sound like nonsense? After all, it’s impossible to be a part of every auction prospect’s family. Not really. You can have such a powerful presence in every home that the residents wouldn’t think of calling another auctioneer. Surely you will agree that family members are held in high regard. They are familiar to everyone in the home, helpful when there is a need, quietly present when there is not. So how do you as an auctioneer become a family member to your prospects?

Take a look at the refrigerator door in the kitchen of your next auction call. Do you see any family pictures, school photos, lists or drawings on the door? How are they held up? Would you like your photo, name, and phone number displayed on the door surrounding the grandson’s school picture? This is “family reunion” #1, your first opportunity to become a part of the family. You can do this by ordering a magnetic business card. A rectangular shape with a punch out in the center, this magnet fits over a photo framing it for the rest of the family to enjoy. On the frame is your name, phone number and other auctioneer information. A simple gift for prospects, this magnetic billboard can set the stage for an entire year of “family reunions” with your prospects.

Are you beginning to get the idea? Promotional items are a great method of building your name recognition, the key to effective family marketing is to choose items that make constant impressions on your prospects and will last for years. Once you have placed several items, you become more familiar to the family. They will refer friends and relatives to you without even knowing why.
